Birmingham is already home to a variety of sustainability efforts aimed at improving environmental resilience, social equity, economic vitality, and community well-being. These initiatives are shaping a greener, healthier, and more inclusive future for all 23 communities across the city.

Below, you will find highlighted sustainability initiatives currently happening in Birmingham. Whether you're passionate about clean energy, transportation, environmental justice, or waste reduction, there are plenty of ways to make an impact!

Urban Agriculture & Food Access

Initiative Name:

Jones Valley Teaching Farm

Leading the Effort:

Jones Valley Teaching Farm (JVTF)

​

Description of the Initiative:
Jones Valley Teaching Farm is an urban farm that provides hands-on education and workforce development programs focused on sustainable agriculture, food systems, and healthy eating. Through its Good School Food program, JVTF works with Birmingham schools to integrate farming and nutrition into the curriculum, empowering students to grow and prepare fresh food.

Why It’s Important:
This initiative promotes food security, environmental sustainability, and health equity by teaching youth and communities about locally grown food. It also supports Birmingham’s urban resilience by increasing access to fresh produce, reducing food deserts, and fostering community engagement in sustainable agriculture.

How To Get Involved:

Volunteer at the farm to help with planting, harvesting, and maintaining crops. Support educational programs by donating or partnering with JVTF. Attend farm events and workshops on sustainable farming and nutrition.

Land Conservation & Green Infrastructure

Initiative Name:

Land Conservation and Trail Development​

Freshwater Land Trust

Description of the Initiative:

Freshwater Land Trust works to conserve and protect land that is critical to water quality, wildlife habitats, and public recreation in central Alabama. Their efforts include preserving green spaces and developing trails that enhance environmental sustainability and community well-being.​

Why It’s Important:

By protecting natural lands and waterways, Freshwater Land Trust helps improve Birmingham’s air and water quality, mitigate flooding, and create outdoor recreational opportunities that benefit public health. Their work also contributes to urban resilience and enhances green infrastructure across the region.

Regional Greenways Expansion

Jefferson County Greenway Foundation

The Jefferson County Greenways Foundation is a coalition of organizations and municipalities working to develop a connected system of greenways, trails, and parks throughout Jefferson County. Their mission is to enhance mobility, promote active transportation, and expand access to outdoor recreation.

Why It’s Important:

A robust greenway system reduces urban heat, improves air quality, and encourages healthy lifestyles by providing safe walking and biking paths. It also connects communities, reduces traffic congestion, and supports local economic development through ecotourism and business opportunities.

The Cahaba River is a critical source of drinking water for Birmingham and surrounding communities. Protecting the river ensures clean water, reduces pollution, and preserves the natural ecosystems that contribute to climate resilience and biodiversity.

Institutional Leadership in Climate Action

Initiative Name:

Sustainable Campus and Communities Initiative

University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Sustainability

​

Description of the Initiative:

The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Sustainability program leads campus-wide efforts to reduce environmental impact, promote sustainable operations, and integrate sustainability into education and research. Initiatives include energy efficiency, waste reduction, sustainable transportation, and green building practices.

Why It’s Important: 

UAB’s sustainability efforts set an example for institutions and businesses in Birmingham, demonstrating how sustainability can be integrated into daily operations. Their programs reduce carbon emissions, lower resource consumption, and inspire students and staff to be environmental stewards.

Green New Deal for Birmingham

GASP (Greater-Birmingham Alliance to Stop Pollution)

The Green New Deal for Birmingham campaign aims to develop a people-driven, justice-first climate action plan for the city. This initiative focuses on addressing carbon emissions equitably while transitioning to a clean energy economy.

By creating a comprehensive climate action plan, the initiative seeks to mitigate environmental impacts, promote public health, and ensure that all communities benefit from sustainable development.

How To Get Involved:

Residents can participate by attending community meetings, providing input on the climate action plan, and supporting GASP's advocacy efforts.

Mayor's Office of Resilience and Sustainability

Join Rails to Trails Conservancy and partners from across Alabama on April 26th for a day of events celebrating Alabama's trails. We'll explore Birmingham's trails and celebrate Alabama's vision for trails and outdoor recreation as an economic powerhouse—creating new jobs, attracting talent, inspiring entrepreneurs and generating new investment in the state.
